FIFA Ethics and Regulations Watch (FERW) strongly believes it is the right decision for FIFA to take over the running of African football.
On Thursday, it was announced that FIFA is to take over the running of African soccer in the wake of corruption scandals around the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
FIFA general secretary Fatma Samoura has been appointed as “FIFA High Commissioner for Africa” by the CAF executive committee.
The idea was allegedly proposed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF vice president Amaju Pinnick, as a result of the CAF president Ahmad Ahmad’s detention for corruption allegations and sexual misconduct.
According to the statement, Ms Samoura will take over the running of CAF from August to January with the possibility of a renewal of her six-month stint. She will be assisted by experts to oversee the management of CAF, including governance and administrative procedures. The goal is to improve the professionalism of the organisation and support growth and development in all African countries. FIFA will also undertake a forensic audit of CAF.
In light of this news, FERW calls on FIFA to do their best in enhancing the management of CAF and supporting development in all African countries.
Furthermore, FERW also calls on all football officials to abide by FIFA regulations and act in accordance with the FIFA Code of Ethics to ensure that all practices are conducted in a corruption-free environment, towards the growth and prosperity of football worldwide.
